Hovhannes Shiraz: Poet of Love and Homeland
Some poets are known by their lines before we recall their names. Hovhannes Shiraz is one of them. His lyric voice is as simple and warm as a mother's lullaby, yet as deep as love for one's homeland. Shiraz wrote about love so that every reader recognized their own feeling in his words, and about Armenia so that the country became a living, breathing being.
The best way into his work is the collection Poems and Long Poems: Selected Works, which moves from tender love songs to the tragic breath of his "Armenian Dante." Here Shiraz is both the gentle lover and the witness to his people's pain.
To understand Shiraz more fully, it helps to read him beside the great voices of his time. The poems of Yeghishe Charents (read online) bring the fire and rebellious spirit of the twentieth century, sounding like a powerful counterpoint to Shiraz's lyricism. Meanwhile, the poems of Grigor Zohrap (read online) open the refined world of a Western Armenian classic, completing the larger picture of Armenian poetry.
Three poets, three destinies, one language through which the Armenian soul speaks. In reading Shiraz, you not only discover poetry; you learn to love both the person beside you and the land beneath your feet.
