The Ottoman crisis in Western Anatolia

This study refers to the Ottoman crisis in Western Anatolia, focusing on the period of imperial fragmentation, regional instability, and escalating military-political tensions in the late Ottoman context. It examines how weakening central authority in Constantinople led to the rise of competing local power structures, irregular armed groups, and nationalist movements, which collectively destabilized administrative control in Western Anatolia. A key aspect of the crisis is the breakdown of fiscal and military governance, which reduced the state’s capacity to maintain order, enforce taxation, and secure key urban and rural areas. The analysis also highlights the role of external pressures from European powers, economic dependency, and wartime disruptions that intensified shortages, population movements, and social unrest. Special attention is given to the emergence of competing territorial claims and population conflicts, which further complicated efforts at centralization and reform. In this context, Western Anatolia becomes a strategic and contested space where imperial authority, local actors, and external interests intersected, producing a prolonged period of instability that contributed to the broader transformation of the late Ottoman political order.
