The horrors of Adana

This work deals with the tragic events known as the Adana massacres of 1909, examining the violence and destruction inflicted upon the Armenian population of the Adana region within the Ottoman Empire. The study focuses on the historical background of the crisis, including the political instability following the Young Turk Revolution, rising ethnic tensions, and the breakdown of local security structures that led to large-scale anti-Armenian violence. It analyzes eyewitness accounts, contemporary reports, diplomatic documents, and later historiographical interpretations in order to reconstruct the sequence of events and assess the scale of human and material losses. Special attention is given to the role of local authorities, irregular armed groups, and the broader imperial context in which the massacres occurred, as well as the reactions of international observers and missionary organizations. The work also explores the long-term consequences of the Adana atrocities for the Armenian community in Cilicia, including demographic changes, migration, and the psychological and cultural impact on survivors. In a broader sense, it situates the Adana events within the continuum of late Ottoman violence against Armenians, highlighting their significance as a precursor to later catastrophes in the early 20th century.
